Some Saturday linkiness
First, inappropriate extrapolation is one of my pet peeves. So this xkcd comic cracked me up.
Next, thanks to Alas, A Blog, I found this long but worthwhile essay about class and race and online communities on Racialicious by guest blogger danah boyd. And a story about racist segregation in off-line communities.
And, for my ongoing edification regarding cis- and transgender, I found this essay on Feministe enlightening.

Yeah, that xkcd comic pretty much says it all. That's like New York City rationalizing the shoving of calorie counts in everyone's faces whether they asked for them or not, by saying "100 extra calories a day means 10 pounds of weight gain a year." So, uh, after 30 years of "indulgence" after the age of 21, that means most people could expect to gain 300 pounds in adulthood? How come this almost never happens, then? (Hell, even most binge eaters don't gain 300 pounds in adulthood, let alone those of us who merely indulged in a few "extra" mouthfuls.)
That Racialicious essay is interesting, too. Personally, I'm not signing up for either one (Facebook OR MySpace) until I have virtually no choice. I'm afraid I'd lose my job if I got caught up in that social networking stuff for hours a day; when I'm not actively working, I'm not making money.
